In August 2021, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its latest report, and the findings are grim:
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the report a
Code Red for humanity. Climate change is here. There is no time to waste.
Every sector of the economy must address this crisis.
That includes emerging fields like cryptocurrencies, which are exploding into the mainstream by offering the prospect of an inclusive and more efficient financial system.
Proof-of-Work (PoW) technology is a colossal and growing source of CO2 emissions.
PoW’s energy demands and carbon footprint are already unsustainably high. That results in 63 million tons of CO2 every year.
Bitcoin consumes an average of 132 TWh/year, equal to roughly 12 million US homes.
Many major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, use PoW technology to validate transactions. By design, this uses massive amounts of energy.

Did you know?
Bitcoin consumes as much energy as:
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Other validation methods, like Proof-of-Stake or Federated Consensus, secure stored value but use a tiny fraction of the energy compared to the PoW method.
It’s encouraging that many participants in the crypto market are committing to renewable energy sources and offsetting their emissions.
Cryptocurrencies are revolutionizing finance, law, art, and many other areas of life.
We must ensure the development and adoption of sustainable, scalable, and value-creating solutions for all. The revolutionary potential in art involves NFTs, which allow artists to monetize and protect their digital artworks.
Through NFTs, artists can participate in a brand-new economy. They can start or build their careers free from the constraints of traditional financial systems and help ensure that the new economy is built on sound environmental principles.
