Confront Your Fears: SCURO’s Horror Art Jams Offer a Creative Outlet for Emotional Release

SCURO is a Singapore-based horror art jam studio where people are invited to come and paint horror art together. In this experience, everyone is invited to tear, cut and use their canvases as outlets for strong emotions, to purge their deepest fears and anxieties in blood-red paint.

SCURO also prides itself on being an inclusive and judgment-free space where people from all walks of life can experience the thrill of a fully immersive horror studio. This is why SCURO is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Reduced Inequalities and Good Health And Well-Being.

Located on 79 Kampong Bahru Road, SCURO provides both unguided and guided art jam sessions. Each session lasts for 2.5 hours and comes with a 40x50 cm stretched canvas and access to art materials. Participants are also encouraged to dress up in horror-themed costumes, and pi aprons are provided to help keep their costumes clean. They also hire improv actors and art teachers to lead their interactive horror art jams as wholesome zombies or a sassy Dracula.

SCURO recognizes the benefits of horror for emotional relief. Studies have found that viewing horror movies helps people release stress and manage real-life fears and anxiety. All this happens because horror media helps people provide a safe and controlled environment to build resilience and self-confidence when facing real-life issues. Still, SCURO makes it clear that they are not an alternative to therapy. They ensure that their attendees understand that they are there as a safe space for an emotional outlet, but that licensed professionals should be consulted for adequate mental health support.

SCURO offers a unique and creative space for emotional release through its horror art jams, allowing participants to confront their deepest fears and anxieties in a safe, inclusive environment. While not a substitute for professional therapy, SCURO provides a valuable outlet for mental well-being, promoting emotional healing through art.
