Espace Aygo: Sustainably Preserving a Rundown 19th Century Townhouse
Espace Aygo, a collective of young artists and designers in Brussels has renovated a derelict 19th-century townhouse into their home, studio and experimental art space. These renovations were carried out sustainably using salvaged materials and handmade upcycled furniture. The collective had to think creatively about how different salvaged items can be repurposed as household items, such as fashioning cups and beer glasses into a chandelier.
Each room became a canvas where they could blend old architecture with newer materials. Now, as their lease comes to an end, the collective looks to sell their creations and start anew elsewhere. This is a testament to their commitment to showing how home renovations can be done artistically and sustainably, while simultaneously creating a movement that can inspire everyone to their own homes. This is why the work that Espace Aygo does is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Responsible Consumption and Production.
The European Union produces 10.78 million tonnes of furniture waste annually. 80 to 90 percent of this discarded material, whether from production or consumption activity, is either incinerated or sent to a landfill—contributing a significant amount of pollutants to an already suffering natural environment. Only 10 percent is recycled, upcycled, or reused by second-hand shops, social good enterprises and charities. This makes Espace Aygo’s efforts all the more meaningful, as they have created a new way to institutionally upcycle furniture that previously did not exist.
Espace Aygo’s sustainable renovation of a 19th-century townhouse in Brussels redefines how creative spaces balance preservation with eco-friendly innovation. The collective demonstrates a unique, artistic approach to responsible consumption by upcycling salvaged materials and reimagining household items. As their lease ends, their commitment to selling these creations and moving forward to renovate other spaces underscores their dedication to inspiring other sustainable renovation practices around the globe.
